I deployed the VCOPS (vCenter Operations Manager) last week. It is a virtual appliance including two virtual machines – the UI VM and the Analytic VM. With this tool, we gained a really good visibility of our virtual environment in terms of Operations (Health) and Planning (Risk and Efficiency).
Here are some basic concepts you need to understand before starting to use this tool.
Metric: An instance of an attribute is called metric. Metric value is collected every 5 minutes. Dynamic threshold (7 days for the initial values) VS hard threshold.
Major Metric Concepts
Provisioned: Amount of a resource that the use configures.
Usable: Actual amount of a resource that the object can use.
Usage: Amount of a resource that an object consumes.
Demand: Amount of a physical resource that the object might consume without any existing constraints.
Contention: Difference between the amount of the resource that the object requires and the amount of resource that the object gets.
Limit: Maximum amount that the object can obtain from a resource.
Reservation: Guaranteed amount of resources for an object.
Entitlement: Amount of a resource that a virtual machine can use based on the relative priority of that consumer set by the virtualization configuration.
Major Badges and its sub-badges
Health: Overall state of the environment.
-Workload: the demand of resource.
-Anomalies: deviation from the expected behavior trends.
-Faults: events retrieved from vCenter.
Risk: Pontential performance issues.
-Time Remaining: A percentage of time that is remaininng for each compute resource compared to the provisioning buffer (30 days by default).
-Capacity Remaining: the amount of VM can be deployed on the selected object.
-Stress: undersized VM
Efficiency: Potential opportunity to improve the performance.
-Reclaimable Waste: excessive provisioning for an object.
-Density: the ratio of the actual density to an ideal density based on the demand.
