TSM 6.2 Implementation and Administration Training Day 1

Today is my first day of the 5 days ‘Tivoli Storage Manager Implementation and Administration’ training (course TS611). More TSM training info can be found at : http://www-01.ibm.com/software/tivoli/education/

The things that I don’t like TSM so far are 1) TSM does not offer a push method installation of   TSM client, 2) TSM does not integrate with AD authentication.

Unit 1: IBM Tivoli Storage Manager Overview

Lesson 1: Protecting Data

TSM Components

Interface

– Administration Center GUI: Tivoli Integration Portal Logon
– Backup-archive client GUI: dsm (Windows)/ dsmj (Unix)
– Web client GUI: port 1581
– Backup-archive command line: dsmc
– TSM server command line: dsmadmc

Server instance: Multiple instances can run on the same physical box

Scheduler: Runs on both server and client

Backup-archive client:  installed on node and supports encryption (can not de-duplicate encrypted data)

TSM database: DB2, where meta data is stored. The heart of the TSM system

TSM recovery log: scratch pad for the database

Storage pools: Pools can be chained to create storage hierarchy

Policies: determined by the business requirements

Backup and restore functions

Progressive incremental backup: incremental backup forever

Archive and retrieve functions

Capability of archiving for 30 years

Administrator authority

System privileges: All TSM server task
– Storage privileges: Database, recovery log and storage pool management
– Operator privileges: Commands for server availability, resource usage, and physical media management
– Policy privileges: Policy domain, policy set, management class, copy group, and schedule management
– Node privileges: Client actions, product usage, and activity monitoring

Administration Center (AC) on Tivoli Integration Portal (TIP)

URL: https://<server name>:16316/ibm/console

Benefits of TSM AC: Centralized web administration of multiple TSM servers

Scheduling component: administrative scheduling and backup-archive client scheduling

Lesson 2: Data Storage

Storage media

supported media: Tape, WORM, Optical, Disk, CD-RW, DVD-RAM, File, VTL

TSM Related products

for Mail, for Databases, for MS SharePoint …

Disaster recovery manager

Prepare recovery plan, manage off-site volumes and track media

Lesson 3: Licensing for TSM servers

– Basic version: tsmbasic.lic
– Extended edition: tsmee.lic (manage more than 48 tape slots, 4 tape drivers)
– Data Retention: dataret.lic

Unit 2: Installing IBM Tivoli Storage Manager

Lesson 1: Installation overview

Reference: www.redbooks.ibm.com

TSM Server components

System requirements

JRE 1.5 or later

Supported platforms

IBM Aix, HP UX, Windows, Solaris, OS, Linux

TSM AC and TIP Requirements

Tivoli Common Reporting setup

Reporting server uses DB2 9.5, so it can not be on the same server as TSM. As TSM uses DB2 9.7

Lesson 2: Installation and initial configuration

Windows GUI or silent installation (install.exe –r C:\response.rsp)

Selecting the components to install

Directories and user ID for the server instance

Instance Directory

Database Directory

Recovery Log Directories:
– Active log (MAX 512 GB, full DB backup cleans the log)
– Archive log (3-4 times of the active log)
– Active log mirror (optional)
– Archiving failover log (optional)

User ID:  Windows service account/ Naming convention rules

Following the installation wizard steps

The Administrative CLI needs to be installed separately

Checking the installation log

Configuring TSM

Run dsmicfgx to create instance

Specifying an instance user ID

Password must be at least 8 characters long

Choosing a location for the instance directory

Consider putting the database on a separate disks from the logs

The supported DB2 database size limit is 1 TB

Specifying the recovery log directories

The default size of active log is 16 GB

Specifying server information

Specifying administrator credentials

The administrator name must contain both alphabetic and numeric characters

Setting up server and client communications

Default port is 1500

Specifying server options

dsmserv.opt provides the communication parameters and options, and it affects:

– Server communications
– Storage
– Database and recovery log operations
– Client transaction performance

SETOPT makes change active immediately

Starting the server instance

dsmserv –k server_key (the default is Server1)

* Make sure there is no tapes mounted or jobs running before halting the server

Registering the license

register license file=tsmee.lic

* TSM does not support cross platform upgrade

Creating a new server instance in the AC

Manually configuring the TSM server

Create a new server option (dsmserv.opt) –> Define database and recovery log (dsmserv format) –> Start the server (dsmserv) –> Register the TSM license

Uninstall TSM

The following steps must be done before uninstalling:
– Perform a full database backup
– Save a copy of the volume history and device configuration files
– Store the output volumes in a safe location

Lesson 3: TSM AC and TIP

https://<server name>:16316/ibm/console (16316 is the default port, TIP determines 10 more ports based on the first port)

Lesson 4: Backup-archive client installation

Installing the backup-archive client

To install administrative client command lien, you must choose ‘custom setup’ option

Configuring the web client

http://your_machine_name:1581

Automatic deployment for Windows clients updates

Lesson 5: Reporting

TSM for Reporting Monitoring

Separate installation process, and can monitor up to 5 servers

Reporting components

– DB2 9.5
– Tivoli Monitoring: Enterprise Portal, Enterprise Management server and Data Warehouse
– TSM Monitoring Agent
– TSM AC
– Tivoli Common Reporting

Lesson 6: The QUERY command

– query status
– query stgpool
– query db
– query log
– query option
– query actlog

Unit 3: Administrative interface and privileges

Lesson 1: Interfaces for TSM

5 interfaces to access TSM

Lesson 2: TIP and AC

Benefit of using AC: easier, single login …

Health Monitor

Enterprise Management

Storage Devices

Client Nodes and Backup Sets

Policy Domain

Server Maintenance

Reporting

Disaster Recovery Manager (a component of TSM EE)

Lesson 3: Using TIP to manage TSM

Lesson 4: TSM GUI

Backup-archive GUI

dsm

Web backup-archive GUI

port 1581

Lesson 5: Command Lines

Backup-archive command line

C:\program files\Tivoli\TSM\baclient\dsmc

Administrative command line

C:\program files\Tivoli\TSM\baclient\dsmadmc
Console mode: dsmadmc –consolemode

Lesson 6: Administrator authority

Registering an administrator

REGister Admin userid password  FORCEPwreset=No|Yes Contact=contactinfo

Managing administrative authority

Grant authority
– Revoke authority

Removing an administrator

REMove Admin userid

Lesson 7: Export or import server
