Backup Exec 2010 R2: Hyper-V Agent


What can it backup and restore?

· MS Windows server 2008/2008 R2 Hyper-V hosts including all online/offline/saved state virtual machines

· Clustered Hyper-V hosts including the virtual machines on the cluster shared volumes (CSV)

· Individual Files and folders or VSS-aware applications (Exchange, AD and SQL) within the virtual machines when Backup Exec’s Granular Recovery Technology (GRT) is used.

How it works?

Backup Exec takes a snapshot backup of the host. The host in turn takes a snapshot of the virtual machines running on the host. This enables the virtual machine backup without downtime.

Agent Installation

Hyper-V agent has to be installed on the Hyper-V host. And Hyper-V agent already includes the remote agent for Windows systems.

Requirements for using Hyper-V Agent

· Software on Hyper-V host: MS Windows 2008 Hyper-V, Hyper-V agent

· Software on media server: Backup Exec, VHDMount (If the media server runs Windows 2003 or 2008 without Hyper-V role installed)

Requirements for online backup

· The virtual machine must be turned on.

· The virtual machines have to be MS Window server 2008/ 2003 SP2/ Vista SP1/ XP SP3.

· Hyper-V integration service with Backup (volume snapshot) is installed.

Requirements for enabling Backup Exec to collect the catalog data from Exchange, AD and SQL on the virtual machines.

· A licensed version of the Backup exec agent for the application (Exchange, AD, SQL)

· Remote agent for Windows systems must be installed on the virtual machines.

· The credential that you use to access the virtual machine must also have access to the application.

· Enable individual file and folders/ SQL database/ Exchange items/ Active Directory objects to be restored back to the original virtual machine.

Backing up data by using Hyper-V agent

1) On the navigation bar, click the arrow next to Backup.

2) Click New Backup Job.

3) In the Properties pane, under Source, click Selections .

4) Select the resources you want to back up.

5) In the Properties pane, under Settings , click Microsoft Hyper-V .

6) Select the appropriate options for this backup job.

7) Configure the schedule.

Restoring data to Hyper-V host

1) On the navigation bar, click the arrow next to Restore.

2) Click New Restore Job.

3) Select the items that you want to restore.

4) Select the destination.

5) In the Properties pane, under Settings , click Microsoft Hyper-V .

6) Select the appropriate options for this restore job.

7) Start the restore job or select other restore options from the Properties pane.
